Richard Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983) was an American engineer, architect, inventor, and futurist. Britannica records his death in Los Angeles on July 1, 1983 and identifies his best-known work as the geodesic dome, alongside Dymaxion designs such as the house, car, and map. The Buckminster Fuller Institute biography describes the 1927 crisis after business failure and unemployment, when Fuller contemplated suicide and then redirected his life toward using his experience and intellect for the benefit of humanity. MacTutor corroborates the same hinge and notes his later belief that properly used technology could help save the world. His worth was not that every prototype succeeded. It was the planetary design ethic he carried into public language: do more with less, treat humanity as one system, and build for everyone aboard Spaceship Earth.
